Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine and describe the meaning of success experience of smoking cessation by adult males.

Methods : The subjects were 9 adult males, who gave up smoking for more than 6 months. The information of the study was collected through depth interview and participatory observation from Aug. 1st to Oct. 30th, 2006. Unstructured open questionnaires were adopted for the interview and phenomenological analysis method suggested by Giorgi was used.

Results : 3 Focal meanings were drawn from 9 participants. The focal meanings and themes were as follows; (1) Threats severing relationship were physical and social threats (2) Temptations of smoking again were individual and physical temptation, and social temptation (3) New life after temptation were finding alternatives, recognition of damages from smoking, rediscovery for life, and encouragement activities of smoking cessation.

Conclusions : The smoking cessation programs should focus on the supporting group of family members and acquaintances as well as the smokers themselves. The measures to build mentoring relationship between the successful smoke quitters and the smokers should be found.
